Description
The Hive is an indoor play building set in a country park. The client wanted children to feel they were still outdoors even though the building is fully enclosed, so the central space where four themed play zones meet needed a roof with as much daylight and view of the sky as possible. That pointed to a transparent ETFE cushion roof.
The rooflight is 24m in diameter and is made up of two inflated cushions: a 5m central circle and a large ring-shaped cushion around it. Cushions of that span are well beyond normal ETFE practice. To keep the structure minimal rather than adding intermediate steel, Architen Landrell added 10mm cables across the top and bottom foil surfaces. These restrain the cushion and give it the capacity for wind and snow loads. At the centre, the roof is supported by the 10m play tower and spiral slide, so the play equipment doubles as part of the structure. The result is a large, nearly frameless area of ETFE over the heart of the building.
Client: Stockeld Park. ETFE design, fabrication and installation: Architen Landrell.
Description of the environmental conditions
Rural country park site in North Yorkshire with a temperate climate. The cable-reinforced ETFE cushions are designed for wind and snow loading and give the fully enclosed play space high natural light transmission and views of the sky.
