Description

The islandic Pavilion consists of a cube-shaped steel structure enveloped by a plastic membrane. The outside surfaces compromising a double-layer of plastic sheeting - the inner layer blue and translucent, the outer one transparent - are continously covered by a flowing film of water, giving the pavilion the appearance of a cube-shaped waterfall. The cascading water is collected in a circular basin surrounding the building, from where it is pumped to the roof again. To enter the pavilion, visitors walk over a bridge through the waterfall. A pool of water is located in the middle of the pavilion, and a film showing icelandic nature scenes is projected on it. The most spectacular attration at the exhibition is an artificial geyser that propels a column of water from the surface of the pool to a height of 35 meters, far above the level of the rooftop. A section of the roof measuring two meters in diameter opens at each eruption, allowing the jet of water to pass through. A spiral ramp suspended from the ceiling winds upward around the pavilion exhibition center. It provides access to the building and serves at the same time as a space for spectators.
