Description

The atrium cover's design had to meet stringent structural and safety requirements while achieving a visually stunning aesthetic. The complex geometry of the structure, with complex environmental loads such as unseasonal wind, rain and eccentric construction loading, in addition to making the geometry synchronous, posed significant engineering chal-lenges. The team had to ensure that the cover could withstand all this without it being heavy, difficult to install and well within the cost con-straints, making it a very challenging production as well as design problem, all this, while maintaining a light, open and inviting feel in the atrium.

The patterning posed an exceptional challenge, as each and every head-ring was of different sizes, as well as the spans, which meant there were no repetition on the patterning. Further, making sure that the patterns matched could easily have consumed months of design, alignment and reworking of the patterns, was done within 15 days due to the optimisation routines and the backward integration of rhino-grasshopper with ix-Cube, which resulting not only saving costs but precious time in the project. Since ixCube integrates complex CFD, analysis with steel struc-ture and fabric engineering seamlessly, it was possible to flexibly move through geometry, drawings, analysis and patterns, thus saving on hun-dreds of hours of work, and there were no surprises in the final installation.

To address these challenges, the engineers carefully evaluated various fabric options and ultimately selected ATLAS Type II fabric by SATTLER PRO-TEX for the atrium cover. This choice was made after a comprehen-sive analysis of its technical specifications and comparative products available in the market. ATLAS Type II by Sattler PRO-TEX fabric offers exceptional strength, durability, and weather resistance, making it ideal for the demanding conditions of the atrium cover. Its high tensile strength ensures structural integrity, while its excellent UV resistance and self-cleaning properties guarantee long-term performance and re-duced maintenance requirements. The fabric's ability to transmit natural light and create a pleasant ambiance within the atrium was also a crucial factor in the decision-making process.
