Hasan Kalyoncu University Amphitheatre was initially designed as a conventional covering system consisting of solid cladding panels supported by structural steel trusses. Asma Germe (AG) changed the cladding system by a tensioned fabric cover and revised the steel trusses accordingly. By doing so, the amount of the steel has decreased nearly 20%. This was a huge advantage and one of the main reasons to change the system. The other important reasons were the aesthetic and the time gain.
The roof cover was designed as an oyster-like shape at the customer's request. The oyster shape helped to disperse the snow, which is a dominant load factor for the region. The covering system is consisting of two layers. The outer layer is tensioned between the top cords of the trusses. The inner layer is tensioned between the bottom cords of the trusses. The inner layer is needed purely for the acoustical performance of the amphitheatre. Hence, the special fabric with acoustical property is used as the inner layer.
The facades of the double layer steel trusses are covered by a membrane to sustain UV protection for the inner membrane. This is also needed for the back facades of the trusses to prevent the snow accumulation on the inner membrane, as the lower layer of the trusses stands on the ground there.
With the spacious atmosphere sustained by the structural design, the led lightening along the trusses, and the up and down movable stage the amphitheatre became the host of great shows with a capacity of up to 3000 spectators.
Material membrane: Serge Ferrari Alphalia Silent Aw (inner membrane), Serge Ferrari Flexlight Advanced 1302S2 (outer membrane).
