[Detail 1996-8 Berichte]
To mark the 300th anniversary of the founding of the school of Fine Art in Berlin, a floating object was designed that formed the vehicle for an audio visual performance. The supporting structure consists of a hollow sheet steel pontoon with a wooden deck on which a huge inflatable element with a balloon-silk skin is mounted. Fully inflated, the latter is 22m long and has a diameter of 6,40m. The pneumatic structure is supported internally by a tubular steel framework to which the membrane is tied with an elastic reefing mechanism that is also meant to restrict deformation caused by wind. The skin can be inflated by two air pumps within five minutes. Access to the interior is possible through a fabric air lock.
